In case you missed the announcement, we found out at our ultrasound that Little Squish is a boy! I have been enjoying looking at little boy clothes and blankets online. At 26 weeks, we are finishing the second trimester, and beginning the third at 27 weeks. I have already started nesting with a few organizational projects, but we will really start setting up for the new baby after the holidays. If baby were to be born this week he would have an 80-90% chance of survival. That makes me feel good, although I want him to stay in there for a while longer! Every day he is in my belly gives him a better chance as he gets stronger and healthier. I feel like he is a big baby – but that doesn’t worry me. Mr. S was big at his birth (9 lbs, I think) and Kiara was a good size (8 lbs 8 oz).
Baby is the Size of: a head of cauliflower (about 14 inches, and 2 lbs)
Baby’s Heart Rate: 140 at our last appointment at 22 weeks, 6 days
Total Weight Gain: 18.5 pounds This is right on track with a normal pregnancy (not considering that I started overweight…) I feel fine with this; I know that the baby is growing quite a bit and I would rather him be big than too small.
Inches Gained: So far, I have gained 7.5 inches around my belly (measuring from the belly button), as well as several inches around my hips, chest, and my thighs. My arm measurement seems to be the only one that hasn’t grown… I just have to accept that I gain weight in my whole lower body during pregnancy, not just a cute belly bump!
Cravings: I have been so hungry, but have not really wanted specific things…
What I have been Eating: I have been eating more, since I have been really hungry, and I feel sick when I don’t eat enough. I have tried to cut back on the sugar. I was eating too many chocolate covered pretzels… My favorite breakfast is eggs with broccoli (and lots of butter) and a piece of Ezekiel bread with butter and jelly. I often have dates or an apple with peanut butter, and cheese with gluten-free crackers as snacks. Root veggies are always a favorite of mine this time of year. K loves shrimp, so we have done sauteed shrimp with polenta and veggies a couple of times. I have been pretty consistent drinking my herbal tea with alfalfa, red raspberry leaf and nettle. I am going to try to add an extra pint of red raspberry leaf tea a day now. I am also taking my prenatals, cod liver oil, extra vitamin D, and probiotics.
Exercise: I am still walking regularly, although it is getting more difficult in the cold icky weather. I am not doing as well as I want with working out generally. It’s a work in progress. I need to find a way to work it into my routine.
Sleep: I have been staying up to late, catching up on tv shows and blogs, and just thinking too much, so I haven’t been getting as much sleep as I should. I wake up a couple times to pee, but in general am still sleeping pretty well.
Baby Movement: Lots of movement everywhere! This little one moves a lot and gives me good jabs. I usually feel him shortly after I eat and he likes to punch my bladder when I need to pee… I guess it is taking up his space!
Symptoms: Heartburn is back with a vengeance. I am telling myself that the baby is growing hair – it somehow makes it more tolerable. I have been more tired this past month, probably because I have been staying up too late and not working out as much… My lower back has also been hurting a bit, but I finally got back to the chiropractor, and I am trying to be better about not bending and twisting, which aggravates it (not entirely possible to avoid with a toddler…).
What I miss: Sleeping on my back.
What I’m Loving: I am still loving feeling Little Squish move, and K talking to her baby brother. Now that I know the gender it is easier to picture my little boy and bond with him. I am also enjoying eating more; it is not a free for all on sweets or anything, but it is nice to eat when hungry without second-guessing myself.
What I’m looking forward to: Christmas and K’s second birthday. Getting together the baby stuff.
