Happy Birthday! You are now a two-year-old! You are a sweet, active, curious boy. You love to run around, climb on things, and throw balls (and other things). You and your sister often run around together or chase each other around the house. You also enjoy hopping around – it is a new skill for you that you like to practice. One of the few times you slow down are on our nature walks. You love exploring nature and stop frequently to listen or observe something more closely. We hear lots of birds, and even hear and see trains and buses on our walks. It is all very exciting!
You have been having difficulty making words, so we have started speech therapy through our county Infants and Toddlers Program. Our speech therapist comes once a week, and works with both of us to demonstrate things I can do to encourage you to make more sounds, and hopefully some words. So far we are making some progress, as you have been saying ‘no,’ ‘uh’ for up and ‘oh’ for ‘go. You have been really good at using signs and other ways to communicate, so we have also been introducing more signs, and you have been picking them up really fast.
I am trying to be more intentional about giving you activities during our time in the school room. You are not ready for most of the materials, but I have put out some practical life transferring materials, and sometimes I give you matching activities or a three-period lesson on something (such as shapes, colors, animals, etc.) You can do the cylinder blocks, and we tried the pink tower, but you mostly want to knock it down…
Your favorite things right now are vehicles, especially construction vehicles, being read to, sweeping and vacuuming, throwing a ball, and pretending to cook. You often play with the play kitchen and love to transfer things between bowls or dump trucks. For your birthday, we got you a t-ball set and you really like to play with that; now that the weather is getting nicer I am hoping to take it outside.
You are a pretty good eater, although if you are really tired you will skip a meal and want to be held. Your favorite things to eat right now are bacon, cheese, butter, tomato bisque, bananas, and pouches, but you are not terribly picky and do eat veggies and other healthy things offered at meals.
You still take a nap every day (yay!) I can tell that you are tired after lunch (sometimes before), and often if I take too long you will tell me that you are tired by making the sleep sign of head on hands, or pointing upstairs. Your nap is usually 2-4pm, but we adjust it based on the day. Earlier is actually better, but I try to fit a lot into our mornings, so we often don’t get upstairs until 1:30 or 2pm. We have to wake you up at 4 (you would keep sleeping) so that you are ready to fall asleep at 7pm.
At bedtime, you have been going to sleep in your room with K, but move into our room in the middle of the night. Limiting mama milk (our name for breastfeeding) has been difficult. You would still nurse throughout the day and night if I would let you, but it is not practical and getting more uncomfortable for me as you move a lot and have almost a full mouth of teeth. So we only nurse at certain times of the day and for limited periods of time now. We have just started leaving you to fall asleep in your room after nursing time and cuddles – we come back to check on you every few minutes. So far it is working well (knock on wood!) We hope that you and your sister will learn to fall asleep on your own so we can all get a better night’s sleep.
Speaking of teeth, your 2-year molars are coming in. I noticed your gums bleeding as the bottom left one came in; it is the first time I have noticed teeth making either you or K bleed. I think the bottom right is almost in now, but I don’t see the top ones yet.
At your 2-year check-up, you were 34.5 inches tall, and 31 lbs – although you feel heavier than that to me! You are wearing size 6 disposables and still fit in our one-size cloth diapers, as well as our fuzzibunz large. You wear a combination of 2T, 3T and 4T. 3T is probably the appropriate size now, but we are starting to get you 4T pieces so you can wear them longer. You have officially outgrown our well-loved Beco gemini carrier, so we got a toddler one! It has a woodland pattern and I love it! I don’t wear you on a daily basis anymore, but it is perfect for hikes and field trips and for days when you are cranky and clingy.
Something that is very exciting for Mommy and Daddy is that you love to sit on the potty! You often tell us that you want to go, and we help put you on and you actually go! You are not consistent enough not to need a diaper, but that’s ok. You are only two and I am not going to rush you. We are glad you are showing an interest and taking initiative!
Overall, you are pretty relaxed and content. You like playing by yourself and with others, you love your sister (although as normal siblings you don’t always get along), and you give Mommy and Daddy lots of hugs and cuddles. You get excited about your favorite things and point and smile when we are in parking lots, or see a construction site, or people playing a ball game. I am looking forward to seeing you learn and play more outside this summer – and see what new interests you find in the coming months.
