This your second holiday season with us and you are almost two! You are most definitely a toddler now – getting into everything and sharing your likes and dislikes. You are currently interested in vehicles – especially construction vehicles – and animals. You also still like to clean; you help pick up most of the time, and if there is a spill you run to get a towel and try to clean it. You have a hammer from a chunky puzzle set that you carry around with you almost always, even when you are sleeping. Sometimes you don’t know where you left it, and you bring Daddy or I the whole puzzle and point to the spot where the hammer goes to ask where it is. But you are better at finding things than we are! We often ask you where things are when they go missing and you usually know. You are fantastic at finding your sister at hide and seek.
You are not talking yet – you do make sounds, just not many words – but you communicate very well through body language and expression. We are trying to encourage you to use words, but you communicate so well otherwise that I think you just can’t be bothered! I have faith that you will talk eventually.
You still love being outside. One of your favorite places is a dock on the lake near our house. I call it your “happy place.”
You enjoy looking at books now, and often point to things in a book which you want us to name right now. You get angry if we don’t answer fast enough. Your favorite book right now is Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, and you also enjoy Goodnight Moon, Trucks Roll and B is for Bulldozer. (There is a vehicle theme, plus you love seeing the moon.)
Just like Mommy, you love chocolate! You can sense (maybe hear?) when I open the cabinet where we keep the chocolate, even if you are in the other room, and you come running in to get some.
You have been walking, running and climbing on things for a while now. You can get up and down from the couch and chairs, and even Mommy and Daddy’s bed by yourself. You go up the stairs on your feet like a big person, but while holding on to the stairs. You usually sit to go down unless one of us is holding your hand. You can go downstairs backwards very fast! I have been letting you walk with us on our walks a bit, and you are pretty good at staying on the path, but you hate “sharing the path” (holding Mommy’s hand while others go by). You have just started practicing jumping – your feet barely come off the floor, but you are doing it!
You have been joining us for school time. I have some activities and toys set out for you, but you mostly just take things out and make a mess while I work with K. You do enjoy transferring objects with a spoon and drawing with either the colored pencils or chalk.
You still take one nap in the afternoon, while K and I have “quiet time.” K is not always quiet, but at least Mommy gets a few quiet minutes. However, recently your naps have been too long and then you are not ready for bed at bedtime. So I am starting to wake you up after 2 hours or at 4 – whichever comes first. (Most days your nap is at 2pm, but it does get moved forward or back some days.) You usually sleep well at night, until about 5am when you want to breastfeed. Although we have had a few rough nights recently, where it feels like you want to breastfeed all night (which is hard for me) or you scream at us.
You seem to be enjoying the holidays so far this year. You enjoyed seeing family (and eating!) at Thanksgiving, and you loved our trip downtown to see the holiday train exhibit at the botanic gardens. We took the opportunity to pop into the Air and Space museum for a little bit, and your little jaw kept dropping at all the big airplanes and rockets. You also sat on Santa’s lap for the first time this year. You were more interested in the reindeer the photographer was holding than Santa himself, but at least I got a picture of you with him this year, since last year we had a wardrobe malfunction. Of course, this year your sister did not want to sit on his lap. Maybe next year I’ll get a photo of both of you with Santa.
Happy Holidays, Little Man! Gosh, I love your smile! Your next letter will be for your 2nd birthday!
